Tom Harbin, President

Tom Harbin, the proprietor of Harbin Newspaper Promotions, is a 36 year veteran of the newspaper advertising business.

Harbin majored in History at the University of North Carolina-Asheville and has a journalism minor from Northwestern University. A Navy veteran, Harbin published a monthly publication for the Navy in Washington, D.C. and served aboard the nuclear carrier USS Enterprise. He worked in the sports department of the Asheville Citizen while attending UNC Asheville.

Harbin began his newspaper advertising career in 1970, starting  his own company, Community Advertising. Its core services were religious and patriotic features that ran in newspapers covering 12 states. Capitalizing on Harbin’s prior experience in sales, the company soon expanded to offer sales of sponsorships for the features.

To date, more than 200 newspapers have used his features and selling service over the last 36 years. Newspapers have continually turned to Tom Harbin for fresh ways to add revenue. Today as Harbin Newspaper Promotions, his focus is on increasing customers’ cash flow, by enhancing tried-and-true techniques plus introducing new twists and ideas to the industry.

What others are saying...

“Tom Harbin is a former publisher who knows what newspaper needs. Newspapers have won press associations awards for creativity through his projects.”

William C. Rogers
Executive Director
S.C. Press Association

“I have worked with Tom Harbin and Harbin Newspaper Promotions for 30 years. I have always found Tom to be hard-working and thorough in everything he has done for us. He makes calls to the accounts I want him to call on and he doesn't call those that I don't want him to call. He handled my church page for a number of years and we have done a very successful, very popular veterans' salute for three years and will do another one this fall. Tom is a professional and I would recommend his services to any newspapers looking for some additional revenue.”

Larry Franklin
Publisher
The Clinton Chronicle

“For the past five years we have worked with Tom Harbin on various projects, most notably developing and sustaining our 'church page.' Tom has always kept the page full of advertising and profitable for us. Tom's persistence and wealth of ideas have been a great value to our publishing business.”

Patrick C. Yost
Publisher
Morgan County Citizen

It has been my pleasure to have known Tom Harbin for over 25 years. During those 25 years our friendship has grown and so has my newspaper's revenue. Tom first came to me with his church page directory in 1981 and then later on he brought me such special sections as "Just Say No to Drugs", " A Salute to Those That Have Served" and others. Each one a winner. Tom knows the business and he knows how important extra revenue sections are to the bottom line.  Tom also knows that with everything else that you and your sales staff have going on, it is some times hard to find the time to sell a church page or "Just Say Know to Drugs" tab. If you are looking for those extra dollars, but just don't have the time or the sales staff to get them, then call Tom. He will show you the money.

I have known Tom Harbin of Asheville, North Carolina for over 20 years. We have
talked and consulted with each other frequently during that time. Tom and I have
also worked together on many projects. I count him as a man of experience, wisdom and integrity.

Tom has come up with many unusual, clever and effective advertising ideas for
his clients. I also know that he works very hard to make those ideas pay off for
the publications he represents.
